

Breast Reduction Surgery in Carrollton, GA
Breast Reduction Surgery removes excess breast tissue and loose skin, along with repositioning of the areola and nipple to a higher position on the chest. This procedure helps alleviate physical symptoms caused by over-sized breasts and results in a more proportionate and appropriate breast size for the patient.
1. Indications for Breast Reduction
a. Breasts that are too large or overdeveloped.
b. Lack of normal proportion in relation to overall body size.
c. To balance breast asymmetry (one breast larger than other)
d. To improve quality of life by improving posture and reducing neck, back, shoulder pain, noticeable shoulder indentations from brassiere straps, and help relieve recurrent rashes underneath breasts.
2. Procedure Summary
a. Breast Reduction is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or more commonly general anesthesia as an outpatient. It can be performed either at Tanner Medical Center or in the Plastic Surgery Center of West Georgia Ambulatory Surgery Center.
b. Incisions are made as a J-incision to access the breast tissue for reduction. The incision extends around the areola and straight down the lower pole of breast and towards the outside of the lower breast fold. The length of the incision depends on the pretreatment nipple position and the amount of excess skin to be removed.
c. Dr. Kahler will determine at the time of your consultation the amount of excess breast tissue, fat and skin that need to be removed to give a lifted, reduced and overall recontoured breast shape. The weight reduced should also relieve the symptoms associated with oversized breasts.
3. Recovery
a. Patient’s incisions are sutured, taped and bandaged. Patient is also placed in an ace wrap and compression bra that will stay in place until next day post-operative visit.
b. Patient is given several levels of pain medications for proper pain control. Most patients complain of soreness rather than severe pain.
c. Light activities may be resumed within a week. In two to three weeks, patient may slowly resume normal activities and be unrestricted at three to four weeks.
d. Most of the sutures are absorbable but fine skin sutures that require removal will be taken out in a week to ten days.
e. Scars gradually improve over 6 to 12 months and diligent scar therapy is frequently instituted.
4. Administrative
a. Breast Reduction surgery is sometimes covered by health insurance plans. Most insurance plans require medical documentation on failed conservative treatments to help relieve physical pain or discomfort.
